EMDR and learning of the Mathematics: which contributions for which results?

Abstract

Senior Lecturer in psychology and practicing as a psychologist in a counselling center for students,  it was possible for us to meet for more than 15 years, a large number of students  in suffering. We were surprised at how mathematics tests could encourage the expression of suffering. So, we associated the work in mathematics to a real trauma for some students (Vauthier, 2010).

Mathematics is essential in many professional examinations. To help theses students, it seemed interesting to work with them to change their relationship to mathematics. Since 1989 , the date of publication of the first controlled study , the scope of treatment with EMDR is widely spread , mainly in the field of psychotherapy. This scope not cover Sciences of  Education, in particular learning difficulties.

There would be a strong link between perception of mathematics and about the existence of a specific learning unpleasant memory. After reading the evocation of memories by students, the unpleasant memory was mainly due to the teacher and a strong feeling of rejection by the latter and / or class.

Thus, we present the results of our research showing the change in terms of cognitive and emotional remediation in relation to mathematics versus a control group. It then remains to check the stability in time of these long-term results .
